The Brady Bunch: Kelly's Kids

The Brady Bunch: Kelly's Kids
ABC
January 4, 1974
Sitcom
DVD
C+

Another back-door pilot, which Sherwood S. resurrected in the '80s for Elliott Gould.  Since I watched that, I probably would've watched this had it been successful, especially at the age of almost 6, when I'd want to find another sitcom about kids.  Now, well, it's pretty corny, and I wish that they had given the little boys more personality.

Jackie Joseph, who plays Miss Phillips, did two shots on That Girl.  Molly Dodd, who plays the unsubtly named neighbor Mrs. Payne, the one that "makes Archie Bunker look like a liberal," had previously been a Saleslady.

  1. ??? You don't mention that the Kelly's adopted son, Matt (the white boy) was played by Todd Lookinland, Mike's younger brother. Dwayne (the African-American boy) was played by William "Pop" Attmore II, who would go on to be one of the "New" Mouseketeers in the late 70s with Lisa Welchel. Carey Wong (Asian-American son "Steve") did a Wonder Woman and a Chips after the BB...but then retired from acting...

    1. I figured all "Brady" fans know that about the Lookinlands and it wasn't like the two interacted much in the episode. I used to have a "New Mouseketeers" record album, which was weird when "Facts of Life" came along and two of the girls were on the first season. (Julie Piekarski was the other.) I didn't know that about Pop though.

  2. True...about the Lookinlands. Although you mention that they didn't interact very much in the episode...I don't they think they intereacted AT ALL. If I recall correctly, NONE of the kids are in this ep except for Greg, who finds the Kelly's boys ("The Three Musketeers") sleeping on the patio after they run away from home... Mike, Carol, and Alice all appear as well. But I don't think the rest of the kids were in it...I'd have to check....

    1. It's been a long time since I watched the episode, but I could've sworn there was a scene of the Brady kids playing in the backyard as Mr. and Mrs. Kelly reveal their plans to adopt.

  3. Oh yeah...Welchel and Piekarski together on the first season of FOL...two of my big TV crushes..not so much Molly Ringwald, or Mindy Cohn. But throw in some Felice Schachter (also from Season 1...)

I'll do you one better, Rebio, than your New Mouseketeers album. I paid good money for Lisa Welchel's Christian album in the late 80s...let's just say as a singer...she was a very pretty actress! I even went to see her in concert a church here in SoCal...

By the way, BradyGuy is also me, Axel Kyster. Not sure why it changed my screenname...

    1. Felice Schachter was my favorite on FOL. This is my review of the backdoor pilot for that, although I don't mention her or Welchel: https://reviewingeverytvshowiown.blogspot.com/2016/08/diffrent-strokes-girls-sic-school.html
My favorite Blair & Nancy exchange was during the early Jo days, when (if I recall correctly) a photographer tells Nancy her eyes are striking and Blair says, "Like the Polish auto workers?"

  4. Which reminds me of one of MY favorite quotes - the time Blair dated a handsome, but simple, boy from the "special" school down the road. (Blair mistakes him for local boys' prep school student) He tells her doesn't like Picasso because he paints weird...like people with one eye. He tells Blair that he would paint all three of her eyes...she tells him she only has two. He says, yes, but they have three colors...they are beautiful blue...with little flecks of gold...and sometimes there's some black gunk in the corners... LOVE IT!!
