This story by Larry Gelbart and Laurence Marks is important to the evolution of the show, of Hawkeye, and of his relationship with Houlihan.  At first, it feels like a typical first-season episode, with Hawkeye insulting Frank.  But when Hawkeye has his own trouble curing a patient, it really gets to him.  Henry gives him a good talk, as he did when Hawkeye's friend died in the operating room.  And after he operates again, getting the last of the shrapnel out of the patient, Margaret wipes his brow, as the nurses do for the doctors, but this time he wipes hers and tells her, "You're beautiful when you sweat."  It's a moment that's sweet, respectful, and playful, all at once, catching me by surprise.  I'm sure it'll be back to business as usual next episode, but that moment arguably does have a long-range effect.  The series and Pierce are starting to grow up.

Bonnie Jones (Bannerman), Lynette Mettey (Griffin), and John Orchard (Black) all return.
