Sam's friend Marci is applying to Montague Academy, a private school near Boston. It's Angela's alma mater (I don't know what grades or how long she went there), so when Sam expresses interest in going, Angela enthusiastically supports her. Tony is more ambivalent, since he wants a better life for Sam but would miss her going away. In the end, Marci fails to get in so Sam decides not to. It's another "raising Samantha" episode, where Angela tells Tony that she forgets sometimes that Sam isn't her little girl, too. It's very much a family episode overall, with Jonathan admitting he'll miss Sam, and yet it's also the beginning of Mona becoming a harsher, more mocking mother than she was in the first two seasons. (Not as bad as she'd be by Season Eight though.) Note that she plays chess against Jonathan and loses.
Dale Raoul, who plays Miss Olive here, would be Mrs. Phillips a couple episodes later.
