The Farrs wrote this episode set on the Fourth of July, in that year of the Bicentennial, when it was perfectly plausible that four people could show up dressed as Uncle Sam.  Bob and Emily are trapped in their storage locker and move from bickering to (offscreen) lovemaking.  When I was a kid, the funniest moment for me was Howard, in his costume, being ticked off at them for apparently ditching his party.  But the biggest laugh this time was Bob's punchline about dying from exposure, including Newhart's obvious enjoyment of it. Also, him claiming he'd never remarry looks different, considering his "Vermont dream."
