The Bob Newhart Show: A Matter of Principal

This first of two BNS stories by Arnie Kogen and Ray Jessel has Emily quitting her job when one of her students is skipped ahead a grade against her wishes.  She holds onto her principles against the principal, Mr. Brimskill (Milton Selzer, who was on three episodes of That Girl).  When Mr. Brimskill tells Bob that Emily has a mind of her own, Bob dryly says that she's "a footloose little vixen."  Technology note, there's a joke about a microwave sauna.

Michael Conrad makes his second of two appearances as Bob's patient Mr. Trevesco.  Tara Talboy, who plays Emily's student Lisa, would be Karen Faraday on the ABC After School Special: The Skating Rink.

The second season of BNS averages out to a B.  In its quiet, lowkey way, it is remarkable.  The writing and performances are generally strong, and I didn't even hand out a C+ this time.  I don't know what else to say, other than I don't think the next couple seasons will be a letdown.
